Bustles are a necessary aspect of your wedding day look. Some brides don’t care one way or another, but a bustle can be another element of the design of your wedding dress! The tailors are usually the ones to help determine which bustle is best for your dress, but don’t be afraid to ask them to get creative with it! Here are some of our favorite bustle ideas!
Over Bustle / Ballroom Bustle / American Bustle This style of bustle is created by a single, or series of “pick-up’s” along the train of the dress that are attached to points along the lower back of the dress. This works well for dresses that are flared, a-line, or have full, long trains in a mermaid style dress.
Under Bustle / Victorian Bustle / French Bustle Dresses that have very full skirts, with lots of fabric or detail along the hemline do really well with an under bustle variation. You can create a uniformed hem line all around the dress with this style bustle, so the train almost disappears, or you can create a unique look with various tiers. This look is executed by a series of loops and ties that coordinate underneath the dress on the lining layer. Here’s a tip – ask your tailor to color code the points so your ‘maids don’t mess it up 😉
Creative Bustles
Sometimes the design of a wedding dress calls for a more unique bustle. Some asymmetrical dresses may look better with the fabric pulled to the side, or maybe there are layers and layers to your dress, or maybe the shape of the train is more rounded than long. There are many different reasons, but the outcome can be pretty spectacular!
